Christy Funsch: Choreographer  

Christy Funsch is a dance maker, performer, and teacher. Since forming Funsch Dance Experience in 2002, she has had her work presented in Amsterdam, Chicago, London, New York, Phoenix, Portland, Toronto, and throughout California. Christy has enjoyed rich collaborative partnerships with Stephen Pelton, Nol Simonse, Julie Mayo, and Sue Roginski. She has also worked with Susan Rethorst, Katie Faulkner, Dandelion Dancetheater, Maxine Moerman, Leslie Seiters, Mary Armentrout, and many others. Christy holds an MFA in Performance and Choreography from Arizona State University where she studied with Daniel Nagrin. Christy is on the faculty of City College San Francisco, and she has also taught at Hamilton College, New York, UC Berkeley, California State University East Bay, Cabrillo College, College of San Mateo, Skyline College, New Dance Studios in Amsterdam, and at Impulstanz in Vienna. She traveled to Lisbon, Portugal, to research Fado performance gesture for her Movement Analysis Certification through New York's Laban Bartenieff Institute for Movement Studies.  She has been awarded choreographic residencies at CounterPULSE, Djerassi, the U Cross Foundation, and Yaddo. Christy has received four nominations for Performance from San Francisco's Isadora Duncan Dance Awards Committee, and she has been awarded a New Stages for Dance Award from Dancers' Group and the MetLife Foundation, and an Individual Artist Commission Award from the San Francisco Arts Commission. In 2013, Christy was a participating member of ODC Theater’s Sandbox Series and also a mentee in CHIME Across Borders, the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company’s cross-national CHIME (Choreographers in Mentorship Exchange) program with mentor Tere O’Connor. She was named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” for 2014.
